Recover to pressure from behind

A recovering player can affect the ball without fouling when the chance arises.

Required player actions

  • The beaten winger sprints toward a useful recovery angle.
  • The fullback delays until the recovering player can help.
  • The recovering interior challenges only from a controlled, legal position.

Starting picture · Blue: Northbridge · Sand: opposition · Gold rings: focus players · White dot: ball

A starting picture for the practice, with the focus players highlighted. Both teams keep their 4-3-3 roles; movement and decisions develop through live play.

Organization

22 players, two 4-3-3 teams, a full-size pitch and two goals. Begin with an opposition winger advancing beyond 11 toward the left fullback.

Practice task

3 slows the attack while 11 recovers to affect the carrier from behind or close the backward outlet. Coordinate the intervention rather than lunging through the opponent.

What to observe

The recovery supports the front defender and creates a controlled opportunity to regain.

Progression

Let the attacker cut inside or release the overlap so the recovering winger must choose a new route.
