Session objectives
- Create a free player beyond the first line and connect the next forward action.
- Scan early, receive with a next action and recognize the advantage.
- Explore solutions under pressure, then use one successful solution in the final game.
Equipment: Two full-size goals, balls, two sets of bibs, flat markers and cones.
Explore the positional problem
Organization
GK, back four and pivot against three pressing forwards plus two interiors. Use the defensive half at full width, with two target gates just beyond halfway representing the interiors. Rotate players in the same role after each bout so all squad members practise.
Game task
Start with the goalkeeper. Find the pivot or fullback facing forward and pass through a target gate. If the press wins it, attack the full-size goal immediately. Restart from different sides.
Coach observation
The receiving player has scanned, moved out of the cover shadow and has a useful next action.
Roles to connect
- GK / centre-backs: scan and choose through, around or over pressure.
- Pivot / interiors: change passing angles and prepare the next action.
- Fullbacks / wingers: coordinate height and width to release the free side.
Sample club session. Adjust space, load and challenge for the age group and players; all diagrams retain 11v11 / 4-3-3 roles.
