Session objectives
- Recognize a shared pressing opportunity and keep the next line connected.
- Recognize the opposition’s behavior and adjust the collective response.
- Explore solutions under pressure, then use one successful solution in the final game.
Equipment: Two full-size goals, balls, two sets of bibs, flat markers and cones.
Explore the positional problem
Organization
11v11 in both teams’ 4-3-3. Start with the opposition goalkeeper. The front and midfield lines press, while our centre-backs, fullbacks and goalkeeper squeeze up in relation to pressure and threats behind. Use the full pitch so a broken press has a real consequence. Rotate players in the same role after each bout so all squad members practise.
Game task
The opponent starts with the goalkeeper. Curve the striker’s press to screen the pivot. On the pass to a fullback, winger presses, near interior covers inside and the unit shifts. On a regain, attack the goal.
Coach observation
The press is triggered by the pass, with the inside route screened and no isolated chaser.
Roles to connect
- Front three: communicate the pressing direction.
- Midfield: screen central options and cover the first defender.
- Back four / GK: move with pressure while managing runs behind.
Sample club session. Adjust space, load and challenge for the age group and players; all diagrams retain 11v11 / 4-3-3 roles.
