TEAM PRINCIPLEProvide options to play forwardSUB-PRINCIPLE

Lose your marker

Change position or speed to receive away from immediate pressure.

Required player actions

  • 8 checks away from the ball before moving into the marker's blind side.
  • 9 changes direction sharply enough to offer a clear receiving lane or release a teammate.
  • 6 passes when the receiver separates, rather than after the defender has recovered.

Starting picture · Blue: Northbridge · Sand: opposition · Gold rings: focus players · White dot: ball

A starting picture for the practice, with the focus players highlighted. Both teams keep their 4-3-3 roles; movement and decisions develop through live play.

Organization

11v11, full pitch, two goals, both teams in 4-3-3 and normal offside. Start with 6 while an opponent closely tracks 8.

Practice task

8 uses a change of direction, a blind-side move or a rotation with 10 to become available. 6 reads whether the movement actually opens the pass.

What to observe

8 receives separated from the marker, or the movement creates a usable lane for another player.

Progression

The defender may follow, pass the mark on or protect space; keep the attacking solution open.
