Blue wash: Defending half · Gold box: Width, depth and first-line support · Gold rings: key roles

Required player actions

  • 9 stays high enough to occupy the centre-backs without losing an onside connection.
  • 7 and 11 offer width; 2 and 3 support at a different height from their winger.
  • 1, 4 and 5 provide depth behind the ball so the team can recycle or switch.

SUB-PRINCIPLE 02

Connected attacking distances

Adjust spacing to the pressure, ball speed and ability to combine.

Blue wash: Defending half · Gold box: Width, depth and first-line support · Gold rings: key roles

Required player actions

  • 6 adjusts distance from the receiving centre-back to escape the press without becoming isolated.
  • The near fullback and interior stagger their support so one defender cannot screen both.
  • The far centre-back and 1 remain close enough to support a controlled reset.
