TEAM PRINCIPLETake countermeasuresSUB-PRINCIPLE

Offer an outlet between lines

Position to receive after a regain without abandoning necessary defensive work.

Required player actions

  • #9 scans and moves diagonally away from the marker to offer a reachable outlet as a regain becomes likely.
  • The far winger prepares a second forward option only after checking the immediate defensive responsibility.
  • #6 or #1 looks for the outlet before winning the ball, then secures possession if the forward route is closed.
COACHING QUESTION

If we win it, where can the first secure pass go?

Connect the striker after defending a cross

A starting picture for the practice, with the focus players highlighted. Both teams keep their 4-3-3 roles; movement and decisions develop through live play.

Organization

11v11 on a full pitch with two regulation goals, normal offside and both teams in a 4-3-3. Start with an opposition attack on our left; #9 remains connected near halfway while the rest of the team defends in match positions.

Practice task

Defend the delivery. As #1 or a defender can secure the ball, #9 separates diagonally from the nearest centre-back and offers a pass; an interior supports underneath. If the outlet is marked, keep possession.

What to observe

#9 offers a visible, reachable connection without weakening essential defensive coverage, and the first pass is retained.

Progression

Let the opposition pivot screen #9 so the striker must change angle or use an interior for an indirect connection.
