TEAM PRINCIPLERecover when pressure is brokenSUB-PRINCIPLE

Delay and restore shape

Slow the attack while teammates recover between the ball and goal.

Required player actions

  • The nearest fullback or midfielder slows the carrier and guides play away from the direct route to goal.
  • #6 and the interiors recover inside and goal side, identifying the most dangerous supporting runners.
  • #4 and #5 drop and narrow together while #1 adjusts depth and directs the recovering line.

Starting picture · Blue: Northbridge · Sand: opposition · Gold rings: focus players · White dot: ball

A starting picture for the practice, with the focus players highlighted. Both teams keep their 4-3-3 roles; movement and decisions develop through live play.

Organization

11v11 on a full pitch with two regulation goals, normal offside and both teams in a 4-3-3. Restart with the opposition right winger beyond our first line and carrying toward #3; #11 and #10 recover from realistic advanced positions.

Practice task

#3 delays without diving in. #5 covers inside, #6 protects the next central pass, and #11 and #10 regain useful defensive positions. The opponent remains free to pass, carry or shoot.

What to observe

The attack loses speed and our recoverers reach positions that can pressure, cover or track before a clear chance develops.

Progression

Let the opposition right-back overlap immediately, testing whether #3 can protect inside while delaying the two-player threat.
