TEAM PRINCIPLECreate defending shapeSUB-PRINCIPLE

Effective defending distances

Stay close enough to cover, intercept and prevent penetration.

Required player actions

  • The near interior sets a covering angle close enough to help the pressing winger without joining the same duel.
  • #6 adjusts behind the interiors to intercept a central pass or cover the next defender.
  • The ball-side centre-back covers the fullback while the partner and #1 protect depth.

Support the winger without crowding

A starting picture for the practice, with the focus players highlighted. Both teams keep their 4-3-3 roles; movement and decisions develop through live play.

Organization

11v11 on a full pitch with two regulation goals, normal offside and both teams in a 4-3-3. Start with the opposition left centre-back in possession and our #7 positioned to press their left-back.

Practice task

When the pass goes wide, #7 closes, #8 provides inside cover and #6 protects the next line. The opponent may return, combine inside or dribble past the first defender.

What to observe

#8 can affect a pass or dribble beyond #7, while #6 can protect the central receiver without leaving an open gap.

Progression

Vary the speed and angle of the pass to the fullback so supporting distances must change.
