Runs behind the line

Time a run beyond the defence while remaining onside.

Required player actions

  • 9 starts the run when the ball carrier can play forward, checking the defensive line first.
  • 7 curves the run from wide to remain onside and separate from the fullback.
  • 8 holds or releases the pass according to the runner's timing and the goalkeeper's depth.

Run when the midfielder faces forward

Starting picture · Blue: Northbridge · Sand: opposition · Gold rings: focus players · White dot: ball

A starting picture for the practice, with the focus players highlighted. Both teams keep their 4-3-3 roles; movement and decisions develop through live play.

Organization

11v11, full pitch, two goals, both teams in 4-3-3 with normal offside. Start with 8 receiving with a chance to face forward.

Practice task

9 and 7 read 8's touch and pressure before threatening behind. Pass behind when viable; use a supporting option if the line drops.

What to observe

The run is onside at release and gives the passer a genuine forward option.

Progression

Allow the back line to hold high or drop early, requiring the attackers to change timing.
