Close the centre

Narrow to deny direct passes into dangerous finishing positions.

Required player actions

  • #6 fronts the centre-backs and blocks the direct pass into a central finishing position.
  • #4 and #5 reduce the gap between them while keeping a view of the ball and the striker's run.
  • The far fullback narrows with the back line; the near fullback pressures the ball with inside cover.

Mark and track

Keep awareness of the ball and the opponent’s movement.

Required player actions

  • #4 and #5 scan between ball and striker, adjusting goal-side position as the delivery becomes possible.
  • The near interior tracks a late midfield run and communicates any handover before releasing the runner.
  • The far fullback sees both the ball and far-side attacker, tightening responsibility as they approach goal.

Deny the cross

Pressure the wide attacker while protecting the route inside.

Required player actions

  • The near fullback closes the wide attacker with a balanced stance that contests delivery and protects inside.
  • The recovering winger helps against the overlap instead of joining the fullback in the same line.
  • The near centre-back covers the channel and stays connected centrally while the interior protects the inside combination.

Defend the delivery

Protect the width of goal and adjust to the cross and runners.

  • The near centre-back adjusts to the delivery line while the partner protects the central finishing threat.
  • The far fullback narrows to cover the far side of goal and tracks the arriving attacker.
  • #1 communicates the delivery decision as #6 and the interiors account for cutbacks and second balls.

Required player actions

  • The nearest defender closes the shooting line while remaining balanced enough to react to a feint.
  • #1 sets in relation to the ball and defenders, then secures the shot or directs the rebound away from immediate danger.
  • #4, #5 and #6 react after the block or save to clear, secure or challenge the next ball.
