TEAM PRINCIPLEDeny the finishSUB-PRINCIPLE

Mark and track

Keep awareness of the ball and the opponent’s movement.

Required player actions

  • #4 and #5 scan between ball and striker, adjusting goal-side position as the delivery becomes possible.
  • The near interior tracks a late midfield run and communicates any handover before releasing the runner.
  • The far fullback sees both the ball and far-side attacker, tightening responsibility as they approach goal.
COACHING QUESTION

Can you see both the ball and the runner?

Starting picture · Blue: Northbridge · Sand: opposition · Gold rings: focus players · White dot: ball

A starting picture for the practice, with the focus players highlighted. Both teams keep their 4-3-3 roles; movement and decisions develop through live play.

Organization

11v11 on a full pitch with two regulation goals, normal offside and both teams in a 4-3-3. Start with the opposition right winger in possession and their near interior outside the box; our #10 is recovering centrally.

Practice task

#3 engages the winger and #5 covers. #10 checks the interior's late run, #6 protects the cutback and the remaining back line controls the forwards. Continue through any cross, combination or recycle.

What to observe

The late runner arrives with an identified defender, and no handover leaves the player unmarked near goal.

Progression

Let the interior exchange runs with the striker or pause for a cutback, requiring fresh scans rather than fixed tracking.
